Maggie Morock -Birth Doula
About me:
My name is Maggie Morock, I am a birth doula, childbirth educator and former midwifery student/ apprentice midwife living in Wasilla, Alaska. My family and I moved to Alaska in November of 2007, when my husband accepted position as a pastor at a Wasilla church, living in Alaska is a childhood dream come true. I have been married to my husband, Daulton, for 20 years and we have 5 children who range in age from 20-12 years old. I am active in the community, raise Australian Shepherds and other critters, I enjoy gardening, fishing and crafting.
My Birth Education:
In May of 2012 I was trained as a Birth Doula by the Academy of Certified Birth Educators and have met the educational and birth experience requirements to certify through DONA International. I began my midwifery education in September of 2011 with Via Vita Midwifery Foundation. In November of 2012 I was offered and apprenticeship at New Life Midwifery in Wasilla, AK. November of 2013 I was trained as a Birth Assistant by Northwest Birth Assistants. I continued my apprenticeship through October of 1014 when I had to let that go due to some family and personal health issues. Since the beginning of my education in I have had the opportunity to attend 50+ births as a Birth Doula or as an apprentice (student) midwife. Although I am medically trained through my apprenticeship and as a Birth Assistant by Northwest Birth Assistants and although I once held an apprentice permits in the state of Alaska, was certified in BLS for Health Providers and Neonatal Resuscitation, I do not offer any medical services, midwifery nor montrice services to my doula clients. I want to clarify that I only mention them as they are an important part of my education as a birth worker and teacher. I believe that as a Birth Doula I should provide informational, emotional and physical support to a pregnant woman and her support person leading up to her birth and afterward. My doula care does not replace your medical team.
Experience:
The majority of my birth experience is out of hospital and in home or birth center setting. I do however, have hospital birth experience and am educated and trained in supporting women in natural, medicated and even surgical birth. I've attended VBAC, VB2AC birth as well as C-section birth. I enjoy supporting such a special moment in each family's life, no matter the setting. I respect your right to choose for yourself the way in which you will birth your child. It is my goal as your doula to support you and your partner in your choices, to provide you information and help you to have your best birth you can. I also believe that Dads matter! I believe in supporting the birth partner of the laboring woman and making sure the birth partner has the tools to be the best birth partner he can be. Whenever needed I can fill the primary support role and am happy to do so.
Why birth work:
My journey into birth work really began when I was just 7 years old and I witnessed the home birth of my cousin. His birth and the story of my own home birth shared with me many times as a child influenced my personal desire to give birth naturally and at home. While pregnant with my first child in 1995 I eagerly studied every birth book I could get my hands on at the local library. I was fortunate to live in areas heavily populated with many skilled midwives and gave birth to my first two children at home. My family then moved to rural Kansas and I found myself pregnant with no midwife and no access to safe out of hospital birth options. So we drove 90 miles each way to see a wonderful Ob/Gyn who listened to my plea for a hospital "home birth". She was respectful of my desire to not endure an episiotomy and risk tearing (didn't tear at all) and I was respectful of her desire for a hep-lock. By the time my two youngest children were born we had moved near a larger city and midwives were once again available to attend my boys home births. Over the years that have passed I have always had the deep desire and calling to work with pregnant women and take part in their birth experience. I am blessed to be living my lifelong dream and thankful to the families that allow me to share their most precious moments with them. Over the course of my professional birth work, I have learned that many women have not been able to have a fulfilling birth, they feel cheated or robbed of their birth wishes. I have seen calloused and uncaring hospital staff (and amazing hospital staff). I am spurred on to championing a birthing woman and her family by the families I've had the opportunities to serve. My goal as a doula is to be your encourager, your library, your support and in the end your trusted friend.
